UL Solutions Unveils New Safety Certification Services for AI-Enabled Products
UL Solutions (NYSE: ULS) announced the launch of its artificial intelligence (AI) safety certification services, designed to provide comprehensive assessments for AI-enabled products.

The new service addresses a growing need in the marketplace. According to UL Solutions, AI is increasingly integrated into everyday devices and industrial systems, yet the rapid deployment of such technologies brings significant concerns around safety, ethics, misuse and real-world harm.
Certification will focus on key dimensions including robustness, reliability, transparency, accountability, privacy, fairness, safety, security and freedom from bias — reflecting the complexity of evaluating AI systems.
Jennifer Scanlon, president and CEO of UL Solutions, said the company recognises the "extraordinary benefits that artificial intelligence, when used safely and ethically, can offer to society," while also acknowledging the potential risks and the vital role of establishing product safety to foster public confidence and enable wider adoption of beneficial AI technologies.
At the heart of the programme is UL 3115, an Outline of Investigation (OOI) for Safety of AI-Based Products, published Oct. 31 and developed as a framework for evaluating emerging AI innovations that do not yet fall under established standards.
Under this initiative, products that meet the OOI’s requirements via testing and assessment may earn the recognised UL Mark, signalling compliance with the safety criteria. UL 3115 also serves as a foundation for future services covering AI processes and systems.
UL Solutions noted that its AI-related offerings span the full product life-cycle — from concept and design through development, deployment and operation — and that its new certification service joins other offerings such as an advisory service for responsible AI adoption and a Marketing Claim Verification service that checks transparency of underlying AI models in customers’ products.
The company said the service is aligned both with globally recognised standards such as ISO/IEC and with emerging regulatory frameworks, as demand rises for companies to demonstrate the safety of increasingly capable AI-enabled products, including devices that learn and update wirelessly.
UL Solutions, the for-profit arm of Underwriters Laboratories, provides testing, inspection, and certification services, while the nonprofit parent organization continues to oversee safety research and standards development.
