Newfoundland's government health information data almost stolen when contractor used open Network connection

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says a review of a reported government information breach has determined the matter does not involve a crime.

Last Friday, the province announced police were investigating whether computer hackers had seen sensitive patient medical records on a government computer.

Justice Minister Jerome Kennedy and Health Minister Ross Wiseman said a private consultant had been using the computer at home when a breach occurred.

According to Wiseman, the contract employee had hooked up to an open Internet connection.

Kennedy and Wiseman said the consultant became aware of the breach when he or she received a call from someone claiming to be a security consultant.

The caller alleged to be in possession of patient information which had been stored on the consultant's computer.
