Card skimming remains the biggest threat to ATM security around the world, according to the results of a recent survey conducted by the ATM Industry Association (ATMIA), a global non-profit association for the ATM industry.
The "Second Global 2012 ATM Fraud Survey," which was comprised of responses from 225 ATMIA members, also found 54 percent of respondents had invested more in ATM security technology solutions since taking the first survey during the second quarter of 2012 and that about 17 percent had increased their investment in security "significantly."
Among some of the other big threats to ATMs around the world, according to survey respondents, were cash and card trapping – primarily a European problem – followed by gas and explosive attacks, burglaries and cyber-attacks.
"The security of ATMs is undoubtedly world-class – but we need to stay vigilant to ward off new and emerging threats," said Mike Lee, CEO of ATMIA. "One of those we will look at in the 1Q of 2013 is mobile apps fraud."
