Augusta Systems Technologies Create Intelligent Network for Navy

Oct. 28, 2008

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. , Oct. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Navy has awarded a $1.9 million contract to Augusta Systems, Inc., a provider of intelligent enterprise network technologies that will be used to power an intelligent network of unmanned vehicles, sensors and other devices. The network will link geographically separate "swarms" of unmanned vehicles, sensors and other devices, which can act upon data sent across the network by military personnel and from other swarms.

"The Navy's objective is to demonstrate the ability for a distributed, intelligent group of sensors and unmanned vehicles to provide persistent intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities over a wide area," said Patrick Esposito , president and chief operating officer of Augusta Systems. "Augusta Systems technologies help the Navy to achieve this objective by creating an intelligent network for the integration, processing and communication of data from these diverse military assets."

Augusta Systems SensorBridge, EdgeFrontier and SensorPort technologies provide the U.S. Navy's Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) with the infrastructure and architecture for this decentralized, intelligent network, linking multiple unmanned vehicles, sensors and other assets. The network, built upon Augusta Systems technologies, includes:

-- Payload computer systems, utilized for processing of data on-board unmanned vehicles, enabling control of on-board sensors, as well as swarming capabilities (which enable the unmanned vehicles to operate autonomously, with limited intervention by human operators);

-- An intelligent communication system/network backbone, featuring field-level processing and correlation of data from sensors, utilized for communicating data and commands among unmanned vehicles and other assets and between vehicles, other assets and military personnel; and

-- An operator system interface -- a map-based display for military personnel to see the location, status and data from unmanned vehicles, sensors and other assets.

"In utilizing our technologies, military operations become more network-centric. An intelligent network enables unmanned vehicles and other assets to process and share critical data in the field, not at a centralized location distant from the end-user," Esposito said. "Importantly, the vehicles and assets can communicate data to each other, without the need for human intervention. Intelligent networks such as this redefine the concept of real-time information."

About Augusta Systems:

Augusta Systems, Inc. powers intelligent enterprise networks. Augusta Systems(R) products enable collaboration and communication between enterprise networks and edge assets -- sensors, actuators, wireless sensor networks, RFID systems, imagery devices and other edge-of-network systems and devices -- which have existed beyond the reach of these networks. With platforms for building and managing solutions featuring data from edge assets, Augusta Systems provides simplified data integration, processing, correlation and communication capabilities for Network 2.0-enabled enterprises. Augusta Systems technologies and integration services -- including core products SensorBridge(R), EdgeFrontier(TM) and SensorPort(R) -- support security, monitoring, automation, asset tracking and other enterprise applications. Through key partnerships, Augusta Systems also offers integrated monitoring and control products, including ThreatViewer(R) and GridMonitor(TM). These technologies reduce the total cost of ownership for intelligent enterprise networks and maximize return on investment for enterprise networks and edge assets. For more information, visit
