Insider Intelligence: Google Just Made Your Social Posts Searchable. Now What?

A new Search Console update signals the next chapter belongs to whoever shows up across SEO, AEO, and GEO together.

Key Highlights

  • Google's July 7, 2026 Search Console update lets creators and site owners track how Instagram, TikTok, X, and YouTube content performs in Search and Discover – making visible the social content discovery that has been driving traffic all along without appearing in analytics.
  • For security integrators, the implication is direct: a retrofit walkthrough, a school district case study, or a technician video answering what no spec sheet can have been indexable and reaching facility managers and end users for years – now there is a way to see which queries lead to them.
  • Ranking alone is no longer the goal – Answer Engine Optimization and Generative Engine Optimization require security brands to become the source AI cites and speaks aloud, treating every post as findable across SEO, AEO, and GEO together.

This article originally appeared in the August 2026 issue of Security Business magazine. Don’t forget to mention Security Business magazine on LinkedIn or our other social handles if you share it.

Getting found online used to mean one thing. You built a website, optimized it, waited for Google to rank it and hoped people showed up. One box, one page, one discipline built around winning it. That world is not gone – but it is no longer the only one. A quiet announcement from Google makes the shift official.

From the Yellow Pages to a search bar to a phone that answers out loud, search keeps changing. Social platforms became indexable along the way. A TikTok, a Reel, or a YouTube video can now surface in a Google result alongside the websites that used to own that space. Discovery stopped being a single door and became a hallway of them. People started asking TikTok how to fix a faucet, trusting a stranger's firsthand take over a page built to rank. Behavior changed faster than our tools could measure.

We had partial views of the numbers. Tools like HeyOrca, Sprout Social, and Hootsuite gave us reach and engagement. UTMs let us tag a link and follow it home. But none of it caught the interesting part: someone would type a question into Google, find a post published months ago that was never linked anywhere, then click through – and we'd never know. That discovery worked all along, invisible.

Someone would type a question into Google, find a post published months ago that was never linked anywhere, then click through – and we'd never know. That discovery worked all along, invisible. Now you'll be able to see it.

On July 7, 2026, Google closed part of that gap. Search Console introduced platform properties, letting creators and site owners see how their Instagram, TikTok, X, and YouTube content performs on Search and Discover – even without their own website. A performance report shows clicks, impressions, and the queries and posts driving traffic, all exportable. It is rolling out over the coming weeks, so it may not be in your account yet.

If you install access control, video surveillance, or intrusion systems, this may sound like a creator problem. It is not. Your buyers are searching, and they want proof someone can do the work. A clip walking through a tricky retrofit. A post on why a school district chose one platform over another. A technician video answering what no spec sheet can. That content has been indexable all along, reaching facility managers, IT directors, and end users comparing options at 10 p.m. before calling a rep. Now you'll be able to see which queries lead to your videos and where your expertise lands.

For years, those of us in SEO have argued that AEO and GEO are the next chapters of the same story. Answer Engine Optimization is about earning the direct answer – the featured snippet, the spoken response, the result that satisfies without a click. Generative Engine Optimization is about being the source an AI reaches for when composing its answer. AI Overviews, chat assistants, and voice results now stand between your content and your audience, summarizing before anyone clicks. Ranking is no longer enough. You want to be the source that gets cited and spoken aloud.

Your website as a marketing and SEO staple is not going anywhere – but it is no longer the whole story. The brands that win will treat every post as findable, optimize across SEO, AEO, and GEO together, and measure the discovery happening in plain sight.
