Thermo Fisher Scientific Introduces PackEye XS Radiation Detection Backpack for Covert Threat Monitoring

The Thermo Scientific™ PackEye™ XS Radiation Detection Backpack is designed to provide covert radiological threat detection with lightweight portability and extended battery life.
Thermo Fisher Scientific has announced the launch of the Thermo Scientific™ PackEye™ XS Radiation Detection Backpack, a new system designed to support covert radiation detection, identification and assessment operations.
The lightweight, portable backpack is intended for use by homeland security, defense, law enforcement, CBRNe, emergency response, border control and critical infrastructure protection teams. The system is designed to enable personnel to discreetly monitor radiological threats during a range of missions, including urban patrols, special events, border and port-of-entry screening and emergency response to suspected radiological incidents.
According to the company, the PackEye XS incorporates a patented Natural Background Rejection (NBR) algorithm that minimizes false alarms caused by naturally occurring radiation while providing immediate feedback when artificial or abnormal radiation sources are detected.
Thermo Fisher Scientific said the system weighs 8 pounds, compared to a typical industry standard of 15 to 22 pounds. The backpack also offers up to 24 hours of runtime, providing extended operational capability for long-duration deployments. The company noted that the combination of reduced weight, compact size and extended battery life makes the PackEye XS well suited for on-foot and covert operations.
“The PackEye™ XS represents a jump forward in covert radiation detection," said Johnny Long, Senior Manager, Product Management. “With its lightweight design, high detection sensitivity, and integration with RadBridge™ Mobile – a platform that transmits radiation detection data in real time – the system empowers security and defense professionals to monitor radiological threats covertly, even in crowded or mission-critical environments."
The PackEye XS integrates with Thermo Scientific™ RadBridge™ Mobile, allowing remote operation and data sharing capabilities. The platform also supports integration with the Thermo Scientific™ RadEye™ SPRD personal radiation detector to facilitate threat communication and information sharing.
Additional features include IP54 and IP65 exposure ratings designed to support deployment in challenging environments. The system also complies with N42.53, IEC 62694 and IEC 62706 standards for global deployments.
Thermo Fisher Scientific said integration between the PackEye XS, RadEye SPRD and RadBridge Mobile applications for iOS and Android enables rapid identification, remote control and streamlined sharing of radiation detection data.
