The Evolution of Weapons Detection
For years, walk-through metal detectors and hand-held wands were the standard for screening at stadiums, concert venues, airports, government facilities, and other sites. Those locations often earned a reputation for slow, tedious entry processes that relied on significant manual inspection and frustrated the very people they were meant to protect.
Now, as security concerns have increased throughout the United States, more "soft" locations, including schools and hospitals, are using screening technology. For integrators, that means each facility has its own set of special circumstances and expectations.
Schools with open campuses have hundreds of students and visitors coming and going during the day. In the evening, there are athletic events, music performances, and even community activities. In each case, the expectation is a smooth and frictionless entry experience. That means schools require systems capable of accurately screening a large volume of people and bags without impeding traffic flow.
To meet those needs, today's concealed weapons detection systems combine multiple sensing technologies and high-speed X-ray imaging with artificial intelligence to identify potential threats while allowing people to move naturally through entrances without removing items from their pockets, purses, or backpacks. When a concealed weapon or contraband item is identified, a connected tablet indicates who and where to search so secondary screening is targeted and efficient – and doesn't slow down the entire process for everyone else.
Instead of screening 1,000 people, security personnel respond only to the one person who requires attention. Their job shifts from repetitive screening to threat response.
Another consideration for facilities and buildings is public perception. Intrusive screening can create a negative impression that the building or event is unsafe. Evaluating Detection Needs
Replacing a traditional screening system or adding new technology starts with conversation, not a product demo. Bring security directors, facility teams, IT, administrators, and operations leaders together to discuss what's working, what isn't, and what they may need from the system going forward. The goal of those conversations is to understand what the customer genuinely prioritizes – the visitor experience, situational awareness, staffing, operational burden, or something else.
Before selecting deployment locations, there's another set of questions to work through. Look closely at how people actually move through the facility. Which entrances are busiest? When do peak arrival periods occur? Are there special events to account for? Will the system need to be repositioned during the day?
Consider who is primarily passing through the detection system and whether they have any special requirements – families with young children, older adults, or those who use canes, walkers, or wheelchairs. The type of facility and the people it serves should shape the overall screening strategy. A venue serving families and community events may prioritize a welcoming, low-friction experience, while a facility hosting high-profile events or serving higher-risk populations may require more robust security protocols.
Understanding what visitors typically carry is another important consideration. The goal isn't to flag every metal object entering a facility. Keys, phones, and other everyday items can create unnecessary alerts if the system isn't configured around the organization's specific security objectives. Integrators can help customers establish detection parameters that balance security with throughput and the experience they want at the entrance.
Organizations also need a clear plan for what happens after an alert. That includes determining where secondary screening will occur, who conducts it, how prohibited items will be handled, and when additional security personnel or law enforcement should be involved. Establishing those procedures and testing them before deployment ensures the screening system functions as part of the facility's overall security operation – rather than simply becoming another checkpoint at the door.
Opportunities for Recurring Revenue
For integrators, the opportunity doesn't end once the equipment is installed – it's the beginning of a long-term service relationship. Customers need ongoing training, system optimization, software support, and service to keep the technology performing as intended.
Training is one of the first opportunities and is typically negotiated into the initial contract for a set number of users. A train-the-trainer model helps organizations build internal expertise, while refresher training provides ongoing support as employees change roles, new security personnel are hired, or procedures evolve.
Annual service and support agreements provide another source of recurring revenue. Depending on the system and customer requirements, those agreements may include preventive maintenance, software and firmware updates, technical support, system health checks, and periodic reviews of detection settings and operational performance.
Those reviews also give integrators a chance to identify when a customer's needs have changed. New entrances, facility expansions, changing traffic patterns, special events, or evolving security concerns may require configuration modifications, additional equipment, or new deployment strategies. As screening technology evolves, customers may also look to their integrator for technology refreshes and expanded integrations with video security, access control, communications, and incident management systems.
Screening data can also deliver operational benefits – helping organizations understand traffic patterns, determine staffing needs, and identify entrances that become bottlenecks during major events.
Building an Ecosystem
Weapon detection is important, but it's one layer of security. The detection event itself isn't the greatest value – what happens after is.
Integrated video security, body-worn cameras, access control, LPR, alerts, and watch-list tools give security teams broader visibility across a facility. AI-powered analytics deliver more insight by identifying trigger events – unusual behavior, slips and falls, or the appearance of a person of interest – helping teams determine whether a situation requires a response.
Once a potential threat is identified, two-way radios, broadband push-to-talk, dispatch software, and other connected devices get the right information to the right people. Security personnel and first responders can receive alerts, images, video, and location information simultaneously – coordinating response rather than piecing it together after the fact.
Incident management software then brings information from across the system into a single case file for follow-up and documentation. If an incident leads to a criminal investigation, captured evidence can be securely organized for prosecution and defense teams. Over time, data collected across the system can reveal patterns that help security teams identify vulnerabilities and plan for future incidents.

Updating an Existing System
Most clients don't have unlimited security budgets, so it's important to help customers understand that upgrading individual components doesn't mean replacing everything at once.
A client's existing camera system can often stay in place. In some cases, the NVR can be upgraded with newer AI capabilities without replacing the cameras. Camera replacement becomes necessary only when resolution or AI capability requires it.
In practical terms, a hospital built eight years ago may already have hundreds of IP cameras. Rather than replacing every camera, organizations can often upgrade the NVR, analytics platform, VMS, and firmware – replacing cameras only where the technology demands it.
That approach lets customers modernize the system over time without discarding equipment that still does its job.
