College Security Guard Accused of Thefts from Campus Safes
On Thursday, Annville Township Police filed two counts of theft against Kevin M. Richards, 39, of Hunters Chase Lane, Lebanon.
Court documents say he admitted to the crimes.Police said Richards was arraigned yesterday on the charges, one count a misdemeanor, the second a felony. A spokeswoman for District Judge Michael Smith's office said a continuance was granted at the arraignment.
Lauren Cusick, an LVC spokeswoman, said Richards was hired as a full-time security officer on April 1. She would only say that he is no longer employed by the college.
"Beyond that, I don't think there's anyone at the college that cares to comment at this point," she said. "This is a situation that could end up in court."
According to the criminal complaint, filed with Smith's office, Richards was employed full-time "during the time of the investigation," in LVC's Public Safety Department as a security officer.
The criminal complaint stated that township police received information from Allen Yingst, the director of LVC's public-safety department, regarding $1,169.75 in missing cash, taken Oct. 31 from a security office safe.
"As the initial investigation was continuing, Mr. Yingst reported that sometime around Nov. 29 ... $6,000 in U.S. currency and checks were removed from a safe inside an office at the Mund College Center, Lebanon Valley College," the affidavit of probable cause states. "Information was received that the defendant went to an [unnamed] Administrative Official and confessed to the incidents."
Richards has been charged with two counts of theft by unlawful taking or disposition, the first count a first degree misdemeanor, the second a third degree felony. He did not return a call for comment.
