Mercury Security has announced its Mercury S4 I/O Module family, a new generation of intelligent modules designed to help organizations modernize and expand physical access control infrastructure while building on existing systems.

The HID brand said the platform is designed for organizations expanding facilities, adopting cloud and mobile technologies and responding to evolving cybersecurity requirements. The modules extend Mercury’s intelligent controller architecture with a secure, modular platform intended to support system expansion while reducing the need for repeated hardware replacements.

“Security infrastructure is expected to last for years, even as technology continues to evolve,” said Steve Lucas, vice president of sales at Mercury Security. “We designed the S4 platform so customers can continue to expand and adapt their systems over time and protect the investments they have already made.”

The S4 platform also addresses space constraints in IT closets and equipment rooms. The new MR54-S4 Reader Interface Module provides four-door capability in the same space previously occupied by a two-door interface module. Each module supports up to 12 inputs and up to eight readers in a single unit.

According to Mercury, the increased door density can help integrators simplify wiring and reduce installation complexity while allowing organizations to expand capacity without adding panels or using additional space.

Security Features Designed for Evolving Threats

Mercury said cybersecurity was a central consideration in the development of the S4 I/O Modules. The platform incorporates secure-by-design architecture with hardware-based protections intended to address evolving cyberthreats and regulatory expectations.

The modules include secure boot to prevent unauthorized or tampered firmware from running. Hardware-enforced trust through an EAL6+ Secure Access Module is designed to secure key management while post-quantum cryptography capability is intended to help protect deployments against future threats.

The platform also aligns with industry frameworks including the Center for Internet Security, the National Institute of Standards and Technology and evolving Cyber Resilience Act requirements.

Modular Design Supports Future Expansion

The Mercury S4 platform is designed to accommodate future capabilities through its modular architecture rather than requiring wholesale hardware replacement as technology changes.

For organizations managing hundreds or thousands of doors, Mercury said the approach can reduce panel replacements, rewiring and technician visits. The company also said reducing onsite interventions can lower lifecycle costs while allowing security teams to modernize incrementally.

Built on Mercury’s open architecture, the S4 family provides six times the memory and eight times the storage of prior generations. The platform supports forward and backward compatibility and broad interoperability within its modular design.

Mercury said its ongoing industry research into access control professionals’ needs has identified continued emphasis on cybersecurity and data protection standards along with forward and backward compatibility in infrastructure planning.

The Mercury S4 I/O Module family is available now through Mercury’s OEM partner network.
