A broad coalition of American industries has launched the SpecTech Alliance to oppose NextNav, Inc.’s petition to change the use of the Lower 900 MHz Band (902-928 MHz), citing concerns over potential costs, operational disruptions and impacts on technologies and services that rely on the band.

The alliance includes organizations representing the trucking and logistics, retail, aviation, aerospace, security, consumer electronics, critical infrastructure and technology sectors. According to the coalition, NextNav’s proposal could impose billions of dollars in costs on American consumers and businesses while disrupting critical operations and affecting devices and technologies used by millions of Americans.

The coalition formed following more than 18 months of technical and economic review and multiple rounds of public comment on NextNav’s petition before the Federal Communications Commission. More than 2,000 comments have been filed in the record, with the vast majority urging the FCC to deny the petition, according to the alliance.

Opposition to the proposal is also supported by independent testing, economic studies and warnings from major nationwide public safety organizations, which the alliance says have raised concerns that the proposal could place first responders and the public at risk.

Industries including airlines, aerospace, trucking, retail, tolling, security, utilities, healthcare logistics, oil and gas, consumer technology, agriculture and public safety rely on the Lower 900 MHz Band to support consumer services, government operations and products and services.

The band has operated under the current FCC rules for more than 30 years, according to the alliance.

With the record complete, the SpecTech Alliance is calling on the FCC to deny NextNav’s petition and maintain the current use of the Lower 900 MHz Band.
